Inside INdiana Business is reporting that Indiana University has fired Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tom Crean. IU Athletics Director Fred Glass says a search for Crean’s successor will begin immediately.

Glass announced the move in a statement on the university’s website, saying the decision came “after deliberative thought and evaluation, including multiple meetings with Tom about the future.” He touted Crean’s successes during his tenure as head coach.

“While winning two outright Big Ten titles in five years and being named Big Ten Coach of the Year, Tom worked tirelessly to develop great young men and successful teams,” said Glass. “However, ultimately, we seek more consistent, high levels of success, and we will not shy away from our expectations. Tom is a good man and a good coach and we owe him a great debt of gratitude for his many positive contributions to Indiana basketball. We wish him well.”

Glass said the IU Board of Trustees and President Michael McRobbie have asked him to personally lead the search for a new head coach. He says he will not create a formal search committee, but will consult with basketball experts from throughout the state and country.

“The expectations for Indiana University basketball are to perennially contend for and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep in the NCAA tournament, and win our next national championship—and more after that.  We will identify and recruit a coach who will meet these expectations.”

Crean began his career at IU in the 2008-2009 season. A press conference is scheduled for 3:00 Thursday afternoon.
